Dozens of bikes at police station By Kristy Martin Lost your bike? Chances are it’s at the Blenheim police station waiting for you to collect it. Community Constable Russ Smith says dozens of bikes are being handed in to police every few months. “We recover an awful lot of found bikes here,” he said. “People find them on their front lawns, in parks or by the river and they either bring them to the police station or ask police to come and collect them. “We suspect in most cases a bike is left insecure by its owner and a dishonest person comes along and thinks it would be a great way to get across town.” Const Smith said there was a big discrepancy in the number of bikes being found compared with the number reported missing. “The number of found bikes far exceeds the number of stolen bikes that are reported to us, so there is a bit of a mismatch there.” Some of the bikes are in near-new condition and some are children’s bikes, Const Smith said. Police are required to keep the

Wills, Kate and PM come to Blenheim Continued from page 2 The high-profile event has got everyone talking and is sure to thrust Marlborough into the world spotlight, says Mayor Alistair Sowman. He said it had been hard to keep the news a secret since a scoping party arrived in town late last year. “I’m thrilled that Marlborough is going to be part of the itinerary and it will be a pleasure to be able to host the young couple and give them a glimpse of some of the special aspects of our town. “I know the Prince, as a pilot, will be fascinated by what they’ll be shown at our Aviation Heritage Museum at Omaka. “And it will be fantastic to have Sir

than Peter.” The royals will be joined by Prime Minister John Key and Labour leader David Cunliffe at a special ceremony in Seymour Square marking the 100th anniversary of the First World War, where they will also meet local veterans. “It is an honour that Blenheim has been chosen for an important ceremonial element of this visit; a wreath-laying ceremony in NZ to mark this important year, the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War,” Mr Sowman said. Huge crowds are expected to turn out to see William and Kate, who will be accompanied by a full security entourage and worldwide media

contingent. But while eight-month-old baby George will be joining his parents on their national tour, it looks like the little prince unfortunately won’t be making an appearance in Blenheim. Officials from the Department of Internal Affairs have been in town this week meeting with council, Omaka staff and touring Seymour Square in preparation for the visit. Mr Sowman said security was ‘huge’ and that a lot of work would go into preparing for the one-day event. This was Marlborough’s turn to shine. “Let’s put on our best faces and hope it’s a sunny Marlborough day for them,” he said.

Phones out

A phone outage affected a series of Nelson Marlborough District Health Board institutions throughout Monday. Wairau Hospital was hit, along with ten other Wairau organisations including support works, early intervention and alcohol and drug. The outage affected both directdial numbers and voicemails at the hospitals. The issue was fixed on Monday night.

Festival promotes harmony By Kristy Martin Blenheim’s Pollard Park was transformed into a sea of colour and energy on Saturday during the ninth annual Marlborough Multicultural Festival. Up to 5000 people attended the event, which featured a parade

of national costumes, 31 performance groups and an array of international foods. Margaret Western, manager of Migrant Services Marlborough, said the festival was part of local Race Relations Day (March 21) celebrations.

“It truly was a celebration of the ethnic diversity of Marlborough today,” Mrs Western said. “Belonging and feeling connected is essential for a healthy community and Marlborough really is a melting pot of different cultures.

“The Migrant Centre was pleased to put on such a vibrant festival.” Mrs Western said the event was run by a small committee on a limited budget and therefore wanted to thank all the helpers and sponsors.

A 70-year-old Christchurch man was airlifted to hospital with a serious leg injury following a motorbike crash in the Waihopai Valley. The crash occurred about 3pm on Saturday at a remote location, according to the team at the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter who transported the injured man to Nelson Hospital. He was assessed and stablised at the scene by the helicopter’s onboard intensive care paramedic before being flown to hospital for furthur treatment.

Liquor laws set to change

Richard Marlow of Woodbourne Tavern.

By Adam Poulopoulos Officials in Blenheim are divided on the onlicence portion of the Marlborough District Council’s new draft alcohol policy. The council has released their new local draft policy, which states on-licence premises like bars and restaurants will need to stop selling alcohol at 2am. National default legislation states they must stop at 4am, but most Marlborough premises cannot operate past 3am. Senior Sergeant Peter Payne was hoping for a 1am closing time, but backs the council’s recommendation. “We support it on the grounds we’re trying to make Marlborough a safer place.” Mr Payne said demand for police resources

between 1am and 4am from Thursday to Saturday was “horrendous.” “I see it (the change) being positive, not just for our resources but also in making streets a safer place at that time of the morning,” he said. However, Woodbourne Tavern part-owner Richard Marlow said he believed that often, patrons in past 2am were not drinking that much anyway. “If we have people in here still enjoying themselves and not intoxicated, they should be allowed to stay.” Mr Marlow said bars in Blenheim would be more affected than his establishment, where most customers arrive by 9pm. Mr Marlow said that change affected his business more. “It means we can’t open our bottlestore at 7am. A lot of people stopped in before going to the Sounds for the day. “People will say ‘they should get organised the night before’ but often they came in to get ice and stuff like that.” The MDC is releasing the policy under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, which allows local councils to create their own liquor regulations. The public can make policy submissions between March 6 and May 2.

Shellfish ban still on The ban on taking shellfish from Queen Charlotte Sound and the Tory Channel remains in place. Nelson Marlborough Medical Officer of Health Dr Ed Kiddle advised people not to eat kina, mussels, pipi, tuatua, oysters and cockles from the affected areas. He said fish, paua, crab and crayfish may be eaten if the gut was completely removed prior to cooking. He added only the white muscle of scallops can be eaten. Council considers youth centre idea By Kristy Martin Council is prepared to investigate transforming the Blenheim library into a youth centre, says Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman. Calls for the Arthur Street building to be turned into a youth centre once the new library has been built were published in the Sun last week, and the mayor himself said he appreciated the idea. Mr Sowman thanked Greg Hall and Anna Pettersson from streetwear shop Cash is King, for their suggestion, which was backed by youth centre study coordinator Russell Montgomery. “This is one option we could investigate,” Mr Sowman said. “We’re not ruling anything in or out at this stage. “It certainly ticks the boxes in that it is central and accessible for the youth.

“Other youth centres in New Zealand have included things like climbing walls, so whether this building would be suitable, let’s investigate.” Council has received Mr Montgomery’s feasibility study on a youth centre for Blenheim and will consider it at the next meeting. Meanwhile, Mr Sowman said he was surprised at how passionate people had become about where the new library should go, after it was decided the current site had become too small. Options included the Floor Pride Civic Theatre building, opposite the current library, or a purpose-built structure on the Taylor River at the end of High Street. Councillors say they are excited by the prospect of a ‘Taylor River precinct’ and have asked for ideas as to how the area around High Street and Wynen Street

A sunny, dry February Blenheim enjoyed a sunnier, drier February than usual, but it was still not as good as last year’s, according to the latest figures. Data from the Blenheim Meteorological station showed Blenheim recorded 241.4 sunshine hours last month, 7 per cent more than the long-term February average. However, the figure was about 50 sunshine hours down on what was recorded a year ago, Blenheim’s

second-sunniest February on record. Total sunshine hours from the summer months this year came to 736.5, 2.8 hours more than the average, while Blenheim’s mean February 2014 temperature of 17.7 degrees was equal to our long-term average. In terms of rainfall, only 18 millimtres was recorded in February, less than half the average and about 60mm less than what was a very wet January.

NZ’s Got Talent winner in concert Renee Maurice, the winner of New Zealand’s Got Talent 2013, kicks off her national tour in Blenheim this Friday night. The 23-year-old will perform at the Clubs of Marlborough on Alfred Street from 7.30pm. Renee, a former Picton resident now living in Wellington, blew the judges and the crowds away with a series of “flawless” performances on the national TV talent show.

might be developed to take in a new library/community building as part of a bigger plan to rejuvenate the CBD. Mr Sowman said the project had the potential to make an enormous difference to the town centre. “The question is not about the library, it’s about how do we make the CBD more vibrant?” The Mayor said potential designs and costings would be needed as a next step but he wanted the business sector and the community to talk about the concept. “Councillors are mindful that the public needs to know what we’re thinking and that they will be kept informed as we research this idea.” Mr Sowman said the area could be developed in a way that turned the town around to face the river, as envisaged in the UrbanismPlus plan.

Top comedians set for Blenheim Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk talks to comedian Dai Henwood about the nationwide fresh-up Real NZ Comedy Tour which visits Blenheim on March 22.

Pictured getting up close with this race car at last year’s Charity Classic Car Show were Anthony Huddlestone and daughter Sophie.

Charity car show this Sunday In 2012 local man Pat Pascoe organised the first ever Charity Classic Car Show to raise funds for Hospice Marlborough which was a huge success. This year’s show, being held on Sunday, March 9 is set to be another great event. “We will be having trucks and motorcycles displayed as well as the world champion jet boat owned by John Derry. There will be something to interest everyone,” Pat said. A number of cars will be coming over from Nelson including three “special” cars which have never been displayed in Blenheim. “One is a very rare model,” he said. If anyone is wanting to display their vehicle they need to be at the Waterlea Racecourse between 9:30am and 11am with their $5 per vehicle entry fee. Gates open to the public at 11am and admission is a gold coin donation.

Whenever I am handed a story to write on a well known comedian coming to town, I try to think of my funniest joke and compile a list of ‘interesting’ questions that, I hope, are different to what they are usually asked by reporters. But when I was handed the contact number for 7 Days funnyman Dai Henwood I instantly screwed up my overused ‘kinky feather’ joke and started a new list for who I consider to be ‘superbly hilarious’. Dai along with fellow comedians Ben Hurley and Vaughan King are confident their tour will bring big laughs to Blenheim. Talking to Dai last week, he said he was looking forward to finding out why ‘Beavertown’ was the place to be. “I make a couple of jokes on the 7 Days show about the name Beavertown and copped a bit of heat for it, I’m dying to find out more about the name,” he laughed. Dai also said he hoped to spend some time enjoying different activities around the region. “I heard there was a big flying fox, but we are always looking for more tips so any suggestions made to our

Ferry forced back The low that hit Marlborough on Monday with hail, thunder and lightning hit Wellington yesterday afternoon and forced one Cook Strait ferry to turn back to Picton. The Kaitaki ferry was threatened by huge swells and strong winds as the storm blew into the lower North Island. Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee has announced a staged 20 per cent decrease in the airline passenger security charges.

New Zealand comedians Ben Hurley, Dai Henwood and Vaughan King are coming to Blenheim this month as part of their nationwide tour.

‘The fresh-up Real NZ Comedy Tour’ Facebook page would be great,” he said. Ending the interview I asked Dai what he would do if he could be Mayor of Marlborough for a day. I was curious about what a comedian would do with mayoral responsibility. “I would make sure everyone had a perfectly barbequed lamb rack for lunch, and after that I think Marlborough would ask me to stay on,” he joked. The fresh-up Real NZ Comedy Tour will be held at the Floor Pride Civic Theatre in Blenheim from 8pm. Tickets are on sale now.

Airline charges reduced Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee has announced a staged 20 per cent decrease in the airline passenger security charges for domestic passengers over the next two years. From April 1 the charge will be reduced by 78c from $4.60 per domestic passenger to $3.82, and a further reduction of 11c will be made on 1 April 2015 to $3.71. A final reduction of 6c will be made on 1 April 2016 to $3.65. International passenger security charges will also decrease, with the current charge of $11.98 per passenger reducing to $11.01 on 1 April 2017. (All figures include GST.)

Sort out your spending Marlborough District Council is considering a rate rise of 2.95%. We’ve asked local finance and insurance specialist Jac Lockington to give ratepayers some tips for managing their finances. When things like rates go up, it’s a good time to review your Cash Management System. I recommend my clients do this at least twice a year as things can change very quickly. So how has your spending been lately? Go through a couple of monthly bank statements and highlight all those little purchases you don’t think about. It’s surprising how a few dollars here and there add up! I suggest people pay their rates, insurance, mortgage and other costs like power and phone weekly or fortnightly, depending on how often they are paid. This way you don’t end up with a large rates bill every quarter. The staff at the council are really

helpful in putting a payment plan into place and you can download forms from their website, or just pick up the phone to them. Now, what about your goals? If you haven’t got any, it’s a great thing to do as it gives you focus and a fantastic sense of achievement when you get there! If you set goals as a family, you are much more likely to achieve them as you have buy in from the kids. Especially handy when they are asking for takeaways. Ask them, “Would you rather have this fast food now, which just ends up in a drain pipe in a few hours, or put that money towards...?” Keep a good eye on your mortgage too. Keep up to date with what’s happening with interest rates and if possible, work with a professional who can guide you on the best options for your particular situation. We are very fortunate to have very good mortgage advisers in Marlborough and none of us charge you a fee for our service. I am a firm believer in finding ways of balancing household finances with quality of life as well as having some sort of security in the background should something unexpected happen.

Jac’s top tips 1. Take stock of where you are financially. 2. Decide where you want to be or achieve, and by when. 3. Be honest about how much you’re spending and where. 4. Put a Cash Management System in place (Budget). 5. Review the CMS every 6 months or when something changes.

He said purchasing the adjacent land was a natural progression for the company. “We’re next-door already and we’d run out of room. “We needed somewhere to go, so it was just logical really.” He said the site would probably have a similar function to their existing one, including parts storage Wadsco's current site, on the left, and the land they have just bought on the and a showroom facility. right. I’ll be busy working. I haven’t been in my new job long - I can’t really take time out from the job.

If I’m feeling ok I think I will be. I’ve seen the Queen and the Queen mother and I’d love to see Will and Kate.

I’m French, so it’s going to be nice to see them but it’s not like for the English. It’s more important for English people.

Yes. Definitely. I’ve always liked keeping up with all of the royal people.

Yeah I guess so. You don’t get to see them very often. They’re very welcome in Blenheim.

Gaige Kenny Blenheim I’ll try. It’s more about the baby. I like little kids.

Dear Ed, I have just read the article in your paper about Blenheim drivers unable to understand traffic lights (Feb 26). The MDC spokesman has shown arrogance and little understanding of what he is talking about. What gives him the right to make such an inflammatory statement? If he thinks people can’t understand:- green - go, amber or orange - get ready to stop, red - stop, then it says very little for his concept of fellow beings. The traffic control that seems hardest to grasp, to my way of thinking, is the roundabout. Many times I have sat for what seems an eternity behind motorists who seem to think that any traffic approaching a roundabout from whichever direction, or whatever distance has the right of way. These are the people who cause accidents. They have the right-of-way, but hit the brakes because they see a car approaching from somewhere, pity the poor sod behind them. Think again Mr Porter!! Quasimodo [that name rings a bell]

Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even if a nom de plume is provided for publication. The editor reserves the right to

abridge letters or withhold unsuitable letters from publication. Send or fax them to the address on page two, or e mail them to news@blenheimsun.co.nz. Please note that your name and street address must also be provided in e mails.

Traffic lights too hard? Don’t think so Dear Ed, The Marlborough District Council’s assumption that the local drivers would have difficulty learning how to use traffic lights (Feb 26) is obviously based on the concept of conventional wisdom. ie. that everyday beliefs which may be regarded as universal truths in fact would not stand up under any scientific scrutiny. To underestimate the intelligence of the general public, many whom have travelled outside and beyond the

Marlborough province boundaries, and have applied their driving skills to abide by traffic light directives, must surely give reason for the council to ‘think again’, should traffic lights be the best system for local traffic flow control. Perhaps the Marlborough District Council could introduce a ‘traffic light familiarisation programme’’ alongside a visual colour blind assessment and an individual’s ‘patience tolerance level’ scan. Dear Ed, I was glad to see the story in Wednesday’s edition on ‘Renwick voices road concerns’, as I am a resident of Anglesea St. What I wasn’t happy with was the reply from “Steve” in regard to heavy trucks using Anglesea Street and Boyce, saying he “understands and yes trucks can appear scary especially when up close, but kids are safer with log trucks on the road than some of the idiots driving in cars” Here’s a fact for you, my 23-month-old baby boy doesn’t find trucks scary at all!! He loves them and every time he sees one he wants to run to the door and open it so he can sit and play with the steering wheel. So if we take out the scary factor from the situation and look at damage to the roads, noise pollution, the fact that a logging truck travelling at 50km or plus at times takes a lot longer to stop than a car, I ask do we have enough evidence to take the matter seriously? To not only have a progress report prepared but actually look at stopping the trucks and other heavy vehicles using the road or even speed humps to slow them down. I have taken photos of the road clearly showing truck wheel marks at the corner of Boyce and Anglesea which I am happy to forward to you if required. Bob Saunders

Dear Editor. Once again I feel I must put fingers to keyboard and protest in some way to Councillor Jessica Bagge’s recent tirade that wineries and cellar doors should be treated differently to other alcohol outlets (dare I say beer?) She stated wineries did not fit into any of the categories in the draft alcohol policy recently produced by the Marlborough District Council. I have read and reread it but cannot see her reasoning. When are we going to stop this ‘them and us’ thinking? Drinking alcohol, being beer or wine, is a pleasure enjoyed by various people. Wine drinkers are no different than beer drinkers, but not according to a letter in reply to a letter I sent to the editor a year or so ago, where a respondent stated wine imbibers were a different class of person than beer drinkers (obviously an ‘upper class’ twit). Whatever form of restrictions you place on alcohol sales it is not going

Songs reflect ‘society’s issues’ He describes his music as ‘drunk rock’ that people will either love or hate, but for Renwick songwriter Matt Johnstone his music is causing quite a stir, as Celeste Lodewyk finds out. For the 24-year-old who performs as ‘Saint Johnstone’, it would be a dream to make a living from his music. But first he is focusing on the up and coming release of his first recorded album, ‘The Good, The Bad and the Saint Johnstone’. He admits that when hearing his music for the first time people will either, “love it or hate it”. So in attempting to describe his style of song writing I instead take a quote from US magazine Rolling Stone who profiled Matt’s ‘musical inspiration’, punk rock band Sex Pistols. “Unabashedly crude, intensely emotional, and calculated to exhilarate and offend.” Matt adds; “It’s a mix between Sex Pistols, Johnny Cash and Eminem.” Then I add my own description comical. When I first listened to the track ‘Pub Crawl’, his most popular to date it took me by surprise but 30 seconds into it I was laughing. “I write about everyday issues that you hear about in the media like binge drinking and violence. It’s my reflection of New Zealand society. “I’m not into fake accents, I want to be real so I tell it like it is. My lyrics are refreshingly honest,” he says. Matt recalls a live performance at the former Chequers Cafe and Wine Bar where he said the audience was predominantly older. Playing his acoustic guitar and performing songs littered with swear

Renwick songwriter Matt Johnstone's first recorded album, 'The good, the bad and the Saint Johnstone' set for release in September.

words, Matt was surprised by the audience’s reaction. “They loved it. “I wasn’t sure how they would take it, but they were laughing and enjoying the beat and that’s how it’s pretty much been with a lot of people who hear my music,” he says. He also performed at a 40th birthday event and said the crowd had been really responsive. “I was a supporting act to a band and got a lot of attention from it. The audience thought it was awesome and Saint Johnstone got talked about a lot , which has been great,” he said. Matt has been song writing since age 15 after being inspired by famous band Nirvana. “From that moment I knew what I wanted to do. It had a huge impact,” he said. He was signed on by independent label Hear No Evil under the name Saint Makindyre, but was later ‘dropped’. Matt decided to record his own EP which he released in November last year online at www.bandcamp.com “Overseas my music did really well particularly in Europe and from that I started writing more for my album which will be released in September.” All the artwork for the album has also been designed by Matt. “I will be having an EP release party in April so keep an eye on my Saint Johnstone Facebook page for more information,” he says.

Mussel Festival 2014 Like eating mussels, talking about mussels or even flexing your muscles? If you do then the Havelock Mussel Festival is the place to be. Set for March 15 at the Havelock Domain, this year’s festival is going to be special as organisers celebrate 10 years hosting this hugely popular event. T he festiva l com m it tee a nd Marlborough 4 Fun are thrilled to be celebrating 10 years and say in particular the support shown by local businesses is, and has always been ‘outstanding’. “This year is particularly special as it brings the total amount of community donations to over $200,000 which is made possible with the amazing support of our wonderful committee, sponsors and the community,” said Katrina Lange of Marlborough 4 Fun. A number of new and exciting fea-

tures have been organised for festivalgoers including the More FM ‘Show Us Your Mussels’. Participants bang the high striker to make the bell ring or get the steel rod as high as possible. Also on the events schedule will be the Kono NZ Mussel Opening competition where individuals and teams open 100 mussels in the fastest time and attempt to make the Guinness Book of Records. Throughout the day there will be plenty of live entertainment led by MC Paul Ego and cooking demonstrations by Master Chef 2012 winner Chelsea Winter, as well as a dedicated children’s area featuring entertainer Adrian Kirk. Tickets are on sale at TicketDirect and are available at a reduced rate if purchased early, and buses running from Blenheim to Havelock must be The Higgins Green Team at last year’s Havelock Mussel Festival. booked in advance.

Passionate about mussels When it comes to Greenshell Mussels, no one is more passionate than the team at the Hairy Mussel Co in Havelock. The business has been established for 10 years and from its modern, well equipped pack house, Hairy Mussel Co products are processed and packed with care before being sent to customers ‘in record time’. “Our unique, monitored handling system guarantees our products are always fresh and always good.” Hairy Mussel Marinated mussels are Greenshell Mussels just like the old days and simply come in one flavour, vinegar. Learning to save a whale

Kids and parents enjoy the picnic.

Children’s Day

Children and parents gathered at a sprucedup Dillons Point Community Playgroup to mark Children’s Day on Monday. Kids enjoyed a series of activities including a colouring in competition, bouncy castle, face painting and teddy bears’ picnic. The centre had recently been repainted, with new bark laid, and playgroup coordinator Tracy Holdaway said she wanted to get the word out. She said the centre was a great place for kids to interact, and for mothers to get the support they needed. The celebration took the place of the usual Children’s Day celebration at Brayshaw Park, Marshall Coles, 3, and Valentina Davey, 2, had which was cancelled this year. The playgroup is open from 9am to noon their faces painted by Claire Falvey. In the background is Jed Griffiths, 2. on Mondays and Wednesdays.

By Adam Poulopoulos Picton locals had a unique experience last week when they were educated about saving a stranded whale. The Department of Conservation and marine mammal charity Project Jonah joined forces for the event, which was held at the Picton Foreshore. The event coincides with Sea Week, and was partly inspired by a series of strandings in Golden Bay in January. Project Jonah volunteer trainer Yuin Foong said the aim of the day was to help the public understand why Golden Bay is such a hotspot and arm them with the basic knowledge in a stranding event. “It’s very easy to cause more damage than do any good if you don’t know what’s going on.” He said public involvement was crucial in keeping the animal comfortable until those with more expertise arrived. He said the day was a success. “It went pretty well. The whole purpose was to provide confidence and give them the opportunity to hear about dolphins and whales in New Zealand.” If you ever see a stranded whale call 0800 DOC HOT or 0800 4 WHALE.

Yealands Yak With 290 competitors, the inaugural Yealands YAK All Women’s Great Vineyard Estate Race, held in Seddon on Saturday, was deemed a great success.

Teams of 2-5 women walked, jogged and ran in pairs around various vineyard trails, and also had a good yak along the way.

In the four years since the Renwick Arms Country Club Fishing Competition resumed, they have never seen a catch like the one they saw on the weekend. Conrad Robertson reeled in a 58.45 kilogram seven-gill shark, more than double the weight of any fish previously caught at the meet. The heaviest fish caught in the kids grade was a 4.75 kilogram kahawai,

caught by Luca Johnson. The most notable other catches included a 15.05kg kingfish, caught by Peter Donaldson, a 15.45 kilogram groper, from James Moslen, and a 9.5 kilogram, snapper by David Jones. The competition was held over three days last weekend, and the 164 competitors enjoyed near-perfect weather conditions.

Sport inbrief Football The NZ King Salmon Nelson Marlborough Falcons’ have qualified for the Youth League final, to be played in Nelson on March 15 against Auckland City. That was despite a 1-0 loss to Youngheart Manawatu last weekend.

Volleyball Volleyball in the Marlborough region got back under way in earnest last week, with the first round of the Subway Spikers’ & Premiers’ Schools Competition on Friday. In Premier Grade Queen Charlotte College Smashers and Bohally Golden Slushies were the only teams to start with a 3-0 win. The day before the Fairweathers Senior Summer League also began, with both the Woodbourne Warriors and Woodbourne Wolfpack getting under way with wins in the Premiers Grade. Both competitions continue on Thursday and Friday this week.

Swimmer making Ganes By Adam Poulopoulos Fifteen-year-old swimmer Sara Gane’s schedule gets tighter and tighter as her swimming career continues to gather pace. The former Marlborough Girls College pupil is one of five Top of the South swimmers selected for the New Zealand team heading to the Australian Age Swimming Champs in Sydney in April. After four days of rest the group head to Wellington to compete in the New Zealand Age Group Champs. For Gane, the meets mark the latest challenges in her swimming career.

Sara Gane

At the start of the year she left Blenheim to head to Richmond,

where she now boards, to get coaching from Nelson Swimming Club coach Andy Adair. The Waimea College pupil said she was enjoying the more hands-on approach of the new arrangement. “It’s pretty good. The coach here is one of six gold-accredited coaches in New Zealand. “Before I was doing training by correspondence, but now its a lot easier.” At the moment Gane, whose breaststroke is her best discipline, is training in the pool for four hours each day, and working on her core a further

four hours each week. “I’m getting quite tired training for two hours morning and night, and trying to fit in school and homework,” she said. “Everything we do is adding to it, and hopefully we get a good reward out of it.” Gane will swim the 100m and 200m breaststroke in Sydney, and adds some medley and butterfly events in Wellington. If you would like to enter a raffle to help Sara raise funds for her trips ring Jenni Gane on 021 269 3235.

UCVC request granted By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim cricket club was the lucky recipient of a $2000 ANZ Cricket grant at Oliver Park yesterday. Representatives from United Country and Vineyard Cricket received the grant, which came in the form of cricket gear. The kit bag included bats, balls, a score book and the full array of protective batting gear. Club co-founder Nick Lane said the club was over the moon with the donation. “The gear is going to help is raise the standard of our cricket and hopefully it encourages some more players to take up the sport again.” “This should be good until we get our next gear bag next year!”

Get down to. . .

He joked. UCVC has reached the final of Blenheim’s premier 2 competition in 2014, but was only founded last year. The new gear will replace equipment that is either borrowed or outdated. ANZ Branch Manager Jo-Anne Swete said she was all too happy UCVC received the gear. “We were really impressed with United Country and Vineyards’ passion to keep regional cricket going in the community. “We hope the equipment means practices are easier and the team will be able to get to the next level in the game.” ANZ awards cricket grants to schools and clubs around the country.

Peter Ray take gold... L

ocal home builders are helping to put Blenheim on the real estate map, taking out prestigious gold awards in the Registered Master Builders 2013 House of the Year competition. Rowan and Donna Lee from Peter Ray Homes took gold in the New Homes $250k-300k category for a unique property they built for local couple Tim and Anna Gifford. The Lees proved they are a force to be reckoned with by also securing a bronze award for New Homes between $350k-400k. Rowan Lee said Marlborough builders had done extremely well in the nation’s top building competition, considering the high calibre of entries. Donna Lee with Tim & Anna Gifford.

Tracy Taylor & Peter Sutherland

lenheim couple Tracy Taylor and Peter Sutherland had a firm idea of how they wanted their home built, so they were pleased when Peter Ray Homes worked closely with them to deliver what they wanted. “This was the first time Peter and I had built together so we had a big list of ‘must haves’ and wanted to be involved in every stage of the build. “Rowan met with us regularly, sometimes in the evenings and went over everything in detail. He took us through showhomes to see how our ideas would look and when our build started he encouraged us to visit the site. “When we did the tradesmen would put down their tools to show us around and

outhlanders Judy and Trevor Grey moved to Blenheim early 2012 to be close to family. Judy says moving to Blenheim and building their first home was beyond their wildest dream for these retirees. “We looked at showhomes in Invercargill, but didn’t see the right plan for us. So Trevor decided to draw our own plans. “We contacted Rowan at Peter Ray Homes. He drew the plans to the right specs, and presto we had our plans back in three days and made the decision to go with it. “The reason other plans didn’t feel right was because of the unusual shape of our section in Blenheim. “Now house and section complement each other. Judy says the entire process was easy. Judy has previously worked for a kitchen consultant, so

etirees Judith and Allan Hutton weren’t considering building a new home, until they looked at an established Peter Ray Home built some years ago. They liked the home, says Judith, especially the living areas, but it was a bedroom short. So they decided to phone Peter Ray Homes. They spoke with Donna Lee. Donna owns Peter Ray Homes with her husband Rowan. Right from their very first meeting with Donna everything went smoothly. The thought of building was easy because her husband Allan was a builder, although “he was going to watch every nail,” she joked. There was no need to worry. Donna and Rowan had

she was particular about the kitchen. But there were no hassles. “The subbies that worked on our house were excellent and we had no problems. We visited most days while they built our home and we felt welcomed. Both Judy and Trevor agree building a new house with Peter Ray Homes is excellent value for money. They built a 4 bedroom home 235sq and they are very happy with the finished product. “It’s easy” says Judy. They also installed solar power water heating. Trevor cannot understand why more homes in Blenheim haven’t considered this option when building, with the amount of sunshine hours we have here. It is so very cost effective when building and saves on the power bill.

talk us through everything, so throughout there were no surprises, everything was done to how we wanted it to be,” Tracy said. Rowan told Tracy and Peter the build would take approximately five months, and it did! “Rowan and his team worked day, night and even weekends to have our home built on time. Everyone who was involved was clearly dedicated to their craft,” Peter said. “People ask us what would we change... to which we reply - nothing! “The trust for Rowan and Peter Ray Homes was there from the start and the whole experience was stressfree and fun,” Tracy said.

everything under control. Allan says today Peter Ray Homes have the buying power and it is so cost effective to build, without compromising on quality. Donna said it would take 16 weeks to build, and that’s exactly how long it took. A plus building with Peter Ray was the helpful advice received from interior designer Simone Hill. “She was extremly efficient and matched our furniture with the new house colours.” Allan commented they had very good builders and being a builder he knows. “The end result, we were totally satisfied Peter Ray did an excellent build for us. We have already recommended Peter Ray homes to friends. We were very pleased.”
