Royals to visit

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will spend one day in Blenheim next month as part of their nine-day tour of New Zealand. It has been confirmed that Prince William and wife Kate will fly into the region on April 10, where they attend a wreath laying ceremony in Seymour Square before touring the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre with film director Peter Jackson. Dozens of bikes at police station By Kristy Martin Lost your bike? Chances are it’s at the Blenheim police station waiting for you to collect it. Community Constable Russ Smith says dozens of bikes are being handed in to police every few months. “We recover an awful lot of found bikes here,” he said. “People find them on their front lawns, in parks or by the river and they either bring them to the police station or ask police to come and collect them. “We suspect in most cases a bike is left insecure by its owner and a dishonest person comes along and thinks it would be a great way to get across town.” Const Smith said there was a big discrepancy in the number of bikes being found compared with the number reported missing. “The number of found bikes far exceeds the number of stolen bikes that are reported to us, so there is a bit of a mismatch there.” Some of the bikes are in near-new condition and some are children’s bikes, Const Smith said. Police are required to keep the

Huge crowds are expected to turn out to see William and Kate, who will be accompanied by a full security entourage and worldwide media

Officials from the Department of Internal Affairs have been in town this week meeting with council, Omaka staff and touring Seymour Square in preparation for the visit. Mr Sowman said security was ‘huge’ and that a lot of work would go into preparing for the one-day event. This was Marlborough’s turn to shine. “Let’s put on our best faces and hope it’s a sunny Marlborough day for them,” he said.

A phone outage affected a series of Nelson Marlborough District Health Board institutions throughout Monday. Wairau Hospital was hit, along with ten other Wairau organisations including support works, early intervention and alcohol and drug. The outage affected both directdial numbers and voicemails at the hospitals. The issue was fixed on Monday night.

Festival promotes harmony By Kristy Martin Blenheim’s Pollard Park was transformed into a sea of colour and energy on Saturday during the ninth annual Marlborough Multicultural Festival. Up to 5000 people attended the event, which featured a parade

of national costumes, 31 performance groups and an array of international foods. Margaret Western, manager of Migrant Services Marlborough, said the festival was part of local Race Relations Day (March 21) celebrations.

“It truly was a celebration of the ethnic diversity of Marlborough today,” Mrs Western said. “Belonging and feeling connected is essential for a healthy community and Marlborough really is a melting pot of different cultures.

“The Migrant Centre was pleased to put on such a vibrant festival.” Mrs Western said the event was run by a small committee on a limited budget and therefore wanted to thank all the helpers and sponsors.

A 70-year-old Christchurch man was airlifted to hospital with a serious leg injury following a motorbike crash in the Waihopai Valley. The crash occurred about 3pm on Saturday at a remote location, according to the team at the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter who transported the injured man to Nelson Hospital. He was assessed and stablised at the scene by the helicopter’s onboard intensive care paramedic before being flown to hospital for furthur treatment.

By Adam Poulopoulos Officials in Blenheim are divided on the onlicence portion of the Marlborough District Council’s new draft alcohol policy. The council has released their new local draft policy, which states on-licence premises like bars and restaurants will need to stop selling alcohol at 2am. National default legislation states they must stop at 4am, but most Marlborough premises cannot operate past 3am. Senior Sergeant Peter Payne was hoping for a 1am closing time, but backs the council’s recommendation. “We support it on the grounds we’re trying to make Marlborough a safer place.” Mr Payne said demand for police resources

Mr Marlow said that change affected his business more. “It means we can’t open our bottlestore at 7am. A lot of people stopped in before going to the Sounds for the day. “People will say ‘they should get organised the night before’ but often they came in to get ice and stuff like that.” The MDC is releasing the policy under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, which allows local councils to create their own liquor regulations. The public can make policy submissions between March 6 and May 2.

Council considers youth centre idea By Kristy Martin Council is prepared to investigate transforming the Blenheim library into a youth centre, says Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman. Calls for the Arthur Street building to be turned into a youth centre once the new library has been built were published in the Sun last week, and the mayor himself said he appreciated the idea. Mr Sowman thanked Greg Hall and Anna Pettersson from streetwear shop Cash is King, for their suggestion, which was backed by youth centre study coordinator Russell Montgomery. “This is one option we could investigate,” Mr Sowman said. “We’re not ruling anything in or out at this stage. “It certainly ticks the boxes in that it is central and accessible for the youth.

“Other youth centres in New Zealand have included things like climbing walls, so whether this building would be suitable, let’s investigate.” Council has received Mr Montgomery’s feasibility study on a youth centre for Blenheim and will consider it at the next meeting. Meanwhile, Mr Sowman said he was surprised at how passionate people had become about where the new library should go, after it was decided the current site had become too small. Options included the Floor Pride Civic Theatre building, opposite the current library, or a purpose-built structure on the Taylor River at the end of High Street. Councillors say they are excited by the prospect of a ‘Taylor River precinct’ and have asked for ideas as to how the area around High Street and Wynen Street

A sunny, dry February Blenheim enjoyed a sunnier, drier February than usual, but it was still not as good as last year’s, according to the latest figures. Data from the Blenheim Meteorological station showed Blenheim recorded 241.4 sunshine hours last month, 7 per cent more than the long-term February average. However, the figure was about 50 sunshine hours down on what was recorded a year ago, Blenheim’s

second-sunniest February on record. Total sunshine hours from the summer months this year came to 736.5, 2.8 hours more than the average, while Blenheim’s mean February 2014 temperature of 17.7 degrees was equal to our long-term average. In terms of rainfall, only 18 millimtres was recorded in February, less than half the average and about 60mm less than what was a very wet January.

Charity car show this Sunday In 2012 local man Pat Pascoe organised the first ever Charity Classic Car Show to raise funds for Hospice Marlborough which was a huge success. This year’s show, being held on Sunday, March 9 is set to be another great event. “We will be having trucks and motorcycles displayed as well as the world champion jet boat owned by John Derry. There will be something to interest everyone,” Pat said. A number of cars will be coming over from Nelson including three “special” cars which have never been displayed in Blenheim. “One is a very rare model,” he said. If anyone is wanting to display their vehicle they need to be at the Waterlea Racecourse between 9:30am and 11am with their $5 per vehicle entry fee. Gates open to the public at 11am and admission is a gold coin donation.

Whenever I am handed a story to write on a well known comedian coming to town, I try to think of my funniest joke and compile a list of ‘interesting’ questions that, I hope, are different to what they are usually asked by reporters. But when I was handed the contact number for 7 Days funnyman Dai Henwood I instantly screwed up my overused ‘kinky feather’ joke and started a new list for who I consider to be ‘superbly hilarious’. Dai along with fellow comedians Ben Hurley and Vaughan King are confident their tour will bring big laughs to Blenheim. Talking to Dai last week, he said he was looking forward to finding out why ‘Beavertown’ was the place to be. “I make a couple of jokes on the 7 Days show about the name Beavertown and copped a bit of heat for it, I’m dying to find out more about the name,” he laughed. Dai also said he hoped to spend some time enjoying different activities around the region. “I heard there was a big flying fox, but we are always looking for more tips so any suggestions made to our

Airline charges reduced Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee has announced a staged 20 per cent decrease in the airline passenger security charges for domestic passengers over the next two years. From April 1 the charge will be reduced by 78c from $4.60 per domestic passenger to $3.82, and a further reduction of 11c will be made on 1 April 2015 to $3.71. A final reduction of 6c will be made on 1 April 2016 to $3.65. International passenger security charges will also decrease, with the current charge of $11.98 per passenger reducing to $11.01 on 1 April 2017. (All figures include GST.)

Sort out your spending Marlborough District Council is considering a rate rise of 2.95%. We’ve asked local finance and insurance specialist Jac Lockington to give ratepayers some tips for managing their finances. When things like rates go up, it’s a good time to review your Cash Management System. I recommend my clients do this at least twice a year as things can change very quickly. So how has your spending been lately? Go through a couple of monthly bank statements and highlight all those little purchases you don’t think about. I suggest people pay their rates, insurance, mortgage and other costs like power and phone weekly or fortnightly, depending on how often they are paid. This way you don’t end up with a large rates bill every quarter. The staff at the council are really

helpful in putting a payment plan into place and you can download forms from their website, or just pick up the phone to them. Now, what about your goals? If you haven’t got any, it’s a great thing to do as it gives you focus and a fantastic sense of achievement when you get there! If you set goals as a family, you are much more likely to achieve them as you have buy in from the kids. Especially handy when they are asking for takeaways. Ask them, “Would you rather have this fast food now, which just ends up in a drain pipe in a few hours, or put that money towards...?” Keep a good eye on your mortgage too. Keep up to date with what’s happening with interest rates and if possible, work with a professional who can guide you on the best options for your particular situation. I am a firm believer in finding ways of balancing household finances with quality of life as well as having some sort of security in the background should something unexpected happen.

On ya bike At 7.30pm, a 17-year-old unemployed male was arrested at a John Street address for receiving a stolen mountain bike. He will appear in the Blenheim District Court on March 10.

Cannabis charge At 6.10am, a 25-year-old German was arrested in Renwick for wilful damage. When he was searched police found a small amount of cannabis on his person. He will appear in the Blenheim District Court on March 10.

More burglaries Over the weekend three burglaries were reported in the Whitney area in Blenheim. This includes the area between the Taylor River, Henry St & Maxwell Rd. Portable electronic items were targeted at the three addresses. This follows on from a series of burglaries in the same area last weekend.

Bach targeted Between February 23 and 26 a bach in Moetapu Bay had items taken from the garage. The offender has smashed a window to gain entry to the building.

Slashed tyres Overnight on February 28 a vehicle parked in Cubitt Street had two tyres slashed by an unknown offender.

Breach of bail At 8.15pm, a 37-year-old male was arrested at an address in Maxwell Road for breaching his bail. He was found intoxicated when police conducted a bail check at the address and this went against his bail conditions.

Trespass charge At 1.30pm on Friday, a 29-year-old unemployed male was arrested in Grove Road after he trespassed at The Warehouse. He was bailed to appear in the Blenheim District Court on March 10. At 10.30pm the same man was arrested for breaching his bail after being removed from his residential address for inappropriate behaviour. He was held in custody to appear in court the following day.

Dear Ed, I have just read the article in your paper about Blenheim drivers unable to understand traffic lights (Feb 26). The MDC spokesman has shown arrogance and little understanding of what he is talking about. What gives him the right to make such an inflammatory statement? If he thinks people can’t understand:- green - go, amber or orange - get ready to stop, red - stop, then it says very little for his concept of fellow beings. The traffic control that seems hardest to grasp, to my way of thinking, is the roundabout. Many times I have sat for what seems an eternity behind motorists who seem to think that any traffic approaching a roundabout from whichever direction, or whatever distance has the right of way. These are the people who cause accidents. They have the right-of-way, but hit the brakes because they see a car approaching from somewhere, pity the poor sod behind them. Think again Mr Porter!! Traffic lights too hard? Don’t think so Dear Ed, The Marlborough District Council’s assumption that the local drivers would have difficulty learning how to use traffic lights (Feb 26) is obviously based on the concept of conventional wisdom. ie. that everyday beliefs which may be regarded as universal truths in fact would not stand up under any scientific scrutiny. To underestimate the intelligence of the general public, many whom have travelled outside and beyond the

Marlborough province boundaries, and have applied their driving skills to abide by traffic light directives, must surely give reason for the council to ‘think again’, should traffic lights be the best system for local traffic flow control. Perhaps the Marlborough District Council could introduce a ‘traffic light familiarisation programme’’ alongside a visual colour blind assessment and an individual’s ‘patience tolerance level’ scan. Dear Ed, I was glad to see the story in Wednesday’s edition on ‘Renwick voices road concerns’, as I am a resident of Anglesea St. What I wasn’t happy with was the reply from “Steve” in regard to heavy trucks using Anglesea Street and Boyce, saying he “understands and yes trucks can appear scary especially when up close, but kids are safer with log trucks on the road than some of the idiots driving in cars” Here’s a fact for you, my 23-month-old baby boy doesn’t find trucks scary at all!! He loves them and every time he sees one he wants to run to the door and open it so he can sit and play with the steering wheel. So if we take out the scary factor from the situation and look at damage to the roads, noise pollution, the fact that a logging truck travelling at 50km or plus at times takes a lot longer to stop than a car, I ask do we have enough evidence to take the matter seriously? To not only have a progress report prepared but actually look at stopping the trucks and other heavy vehicles using the road or even speed humps to slow them down. I have taken photos of the road clearly showing truck wheel marks at the corner of Boyce and Anglesea which I am happy to forward to you if required. Bob Saunders

Dear Editor. Once again I feel I must put fingers to keyboard and protest in some way to Councillor Jessica Bagge’s recent tirade that wineries and cellar doors should be treated differently to other alcohol outlets (dare I say beer?) She stated wineries did not fit into any of the categories in the draft alcohol policy recently produced by the Marlborough District Council. I have read and reread it but cannot see her reasoning. When are we going to stop this ‘them and us’ thinking? Drinking alcohol, being beer or wine, is a pleasure enjoyed by various people. Wine drinkers are no different than beer drinkers, but not according to a letter in reply to a letter I sent to the editor a year or so ago, where a respondent stated wine imbibers were a different class of person than beer drinkers (obviously an ‘upper class’ twit). Whatever form of restrictions you place on alcohol sales it is not going

Songs reflect ‘society’s issues’ He describes his music as ‘drunk rock’ that people will either love or hate, but for Renwick songwriter Matt Johnstone his music is causing quite a stir, as Celeste Lodewyk finds out. For the 24-year-old who performs as ‘Saint Johnstone’, it would be a dream to make a living from his music. But first he is focusing on the up and coming release of his first recorded album, ‘The Good, The Bad and the Saint Johnstone’. He admits that when hearing his music for the first time people will either, “love it or hate it”. So in attempting to describe his style of song writing I instead take a quote from US magazine Rolling Stone who profiled Matt’s ‘musical inspiration’, punk rock band Sex Pistols. “Unabashedly crude, intensely emotional, and calculated to exhilarate and offend.” Matt adds; “It’s a mix between Sex Pistols, Johnny Cash and Eminem.” Then I add my own description comical. When I first listened to the track ‘Pub Crawl’, his most popular to date it took me by surprise but 30 seconds into it I was laughing. “I write about everyday issues that you hear about in the media like binge drinking and violence. It’s my reflection of New Zealand society. “I’m not into fake accents, I want to be real so I tell it like it is. My lyrics are refreshingly honest,” he says. Matt recalls a live performance at the former Chequers Cafe and Wine Bar where he said the audience was predominantly older. Playing his acoustic guitar and performing songs littered with swear

words, Matt was surprised by the audience’s reaction. “They loved it. “I wasn’t sure how they would take it, but they were laughing and enjoying the beat and that’s how it’s pretty much been with a lot of people who hear my music,” he says. He also performed at a 40th birthday event and said the crowd had been really responsive. “I was a supporting act to a band and got a lot of attention from it. The audience thought it was awesome and Saint Johnstone got talked about a lot , which has been great,” he said. Matt has been song writing since age 15 after being inspired by famous band Nirvana. “From that moment I knew what I wanted to do. It had a huge impact,” he said. He was signed on by independent label Hear No Evil under the name Saint Makindyre, but was later ‘dropped’. Matt decided to record his own EP which he released in November last year online at www.bandcamp.com “Overseas my music did really well particularly in Europe and from that I started writing more for my album which will be released in September.” All the artwork for the album has also been designed by Matt. “I will be having an EP release party in April so keep an eye on my Saint Johnstone Facebook page for more information,” he says.
